Membership of Co-operatives East Midlands is open to all like-minded organisations who share our vision of co-operation and business success across Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire.

Members pay a subscription to support the operational activity of Co-operatives East Midlands on a scale reflected on organisation turnover.

Co-operative History

The Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society was established in 1844 and is widely recognised as being the first to successfully define the key elements of how co-operatives should operate: the Rochdale Principles.

From those modest roots grew the modern co-operative movement, with successful businesses operating to those same principles in most parts of the world. Today the combined turnover of the world's top 300 co-operative and mutual businesses alone is equivalent to the world's tenth largest economy.

The co-operative model is more relevant today than ever before: the co-operative model is for example at the forefront of the current surge of interest in social enterprise.
